What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts based upon the understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system (especially the spine and the nerves extending from the spine to other parts of the body). “Chiropractic” comes from the Greek word chiroprakti meaning “effective treatment by hand.” Chiropractors are experts in the care of the bones, nerves, muscles and connective tissues that make up about 60% of your body. All of the joints in your body are part of this musculo-skeletal system and its optimal function is necessary for overall good health.
What conditions benefit from chiropractic?
Although chiropractic is used most frequently to relieve low back pain, studies have found it to be effective for a variety of conditions, including migraine headaches, neck and shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and infantile colic. When there is no interference, your nervous system controls the healthy function of virtually every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body. Is Chiropractic safe?
Chiropractic adjustments or manipulations are extremely safe. The risk factor is estimated to be in excess of one million to one. It is considered to be safer than aspirin.
What’s the cause?
A Subluxation, or more precisely, the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, describes what happens when spinal bones lose their normal motion or position from stress, trauma or chemical imbalances. Automobile collisions, improper lifting, drugs, alcohol, emotional stress, chemical imbalances, and long periods of sitting can all cause the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. Instead of just treating your symptoms, your chiropractor is primarily interested in detecting, reducing, and correcting the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. Your first chiropractic visit will include a review of your health history and determine if your problem is likely to be helped with chiropractic care. If it is, a thorough examination will follow. Your ability to turn and bend will be tested, and other standard orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic tests will be conducted, as well as a thorough assessment of your Acupuncture Meridians and acupuncture points. Your doctor will study the results of these examinations and explain what they mean. Then, the doctor will recommend a care program designed for you unique health problem. With a complete understanding of your condition, you’re ready for your chiropractic adjustment. Adjustments help restore proper spinal and nervous system function, promoting the healing process. Continued visits help retrain the supporting muscles and ligaments of your spine. Periodic examinations will monitor your progress.
